UCLA Life Sciences Public Lecture. March 16, 2011. The Next Frontier in Stem Cell Research. Dr. Amander Clarke.

Amander Clark, an assistant professor of molecular, cell and developmental biology at UCLA, Clark's laboratory uses embryonic stem
cells as a model to study molecular events critical for human embryo
development, with a special emphasis on the human germ line. She and her
research team currently lead the effort at UCLA to generate new
embryonic stem cell lines, with a major goal being the generation of
clinic-grade lines for use in future therapeutics.

A member of the UCLA Broad Stem Cell Research Center, Clark also is
affiliated with UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, the
Molecular Biology Institute and the Hinxton Group, an international
consortium focused on stem cells, ethics and the law. She is associate
editor for the journal BMC Developmental Biology, and a member of the
American Society for Cancer Research and the International Society for
Stem Cell Research, a nonprofit organization that fosters the exchange
of stem cell research information.

  • One of the most engaging presentations on stem cells that I've seen. Too bad someone dropped the ball on the slides half-way through

  • the video is dark.. hmm.. stem cells.. adult stems cells that is a good topic..

  • are you prohibited from using therapeutic cloning to acquire naive SC lines?

  • “I feel I am completely cured” says Ms. Gianopoulos, “my symptoms have disappeared and I have a recovery of many functions, notably my balance and my muscle strength is all coming (back). Even after six months, I feel like there are good changes happening almost every day. Before, my biggest fear was that the changes wouldn’t (hold). I don’t even worry about having a relapse anymore”. • A universal benefit reported by every patient has been the recovery of bladder control. Most MS patients have various bladder control symptoms that include urinary urgency, incontinence, nocturia, or urinary hesitancy as a result of the disruption of electrical impulses from the brain to the nerves and muscles that are involved in emptying the bladder (pudenal nerve, urethral sphincter, detrusor muscle).
