Lettuce felt that mumbling was a believable way to portray grief. That and Lettuce's head had a tendency to disintegrate. Cabbage is far more durable. Ideally, I would have gotten a head of green cabbage to act as the stunt double for Lettuce, but you get to a point where just don't want to spend any more time on your all-vegetable adaptation of an SNL skit.
