The statement or motion under discussion was "we'd be better off without religion"

This is the debate that took place on 27/03/07.

Hitchens quite obviously is a defender of the motion and what we see here is his opening argumentation in favor of the motion.

So your god is a petty 9 year old: "If you don't praise me I will give you all cancer!" Even if it were true, and of course it is not, I would NEVER praise your god or any other as defined by all the major religious texts. Wake up and leave your ridiculous and unfounded beliefs to the Bronze age.

Perhaps it is worth noting - all you Christians should show "christian" virtues of the bible on this forum - right? you believe what god tells you, it's important, etc. So please be tolerant, patient, loving, no foul language, etc. or you're just being another hypocrite.

Non-christians are under no such obligation and should only follow their own moral compass.

At the same time, Christians who criticize atheists will often say it is significant that "90% of all people believe in a higher power." Until 1976, Christians spent more time attacking each other, and it was not until Rowe vs. Wade that people started referring to America as "a Christian nation." The Christians will borrow the support of rival religions when it serves them; for atheists not to hold that support against them would be an unfair handicap.

Christopher Hitchens knew people would start making claims of "deathbed converstions" the moment he passed, so he took the liberty of answering your claim directly. watch?v=q4cPe_YS8i8

    You're welcome.

Hitchens proves Hume's theorem in spades -- that reason is and always ought to be, the slave of passion.
