Liam Brady scores his most famous goal at WHL in that wonderful 5-0 defeat in 1978. Few remember the fact that Alan Sunderland got a hat-trick in the same game.

  • Quality not quantity. Its why football will never be a mass spectator sport in the USA - the most popular games are those that rack up high scores - like basketball - and don't rely on intricate tactics or slow-build ups. Nothing wrong with it - its just cultural difference.

  • Atleast you're on the right path if you think the Spuds are scum.

  • @krakenwave I understand what you're essentially saying, but tactically, American Football is perhaps the most nuanced sport commonly played anywhere. The complexity of offenses is staggering. But the joy you get from seeing a goal go in after a long build up is certainly something special indeed. Like HENRY scoring today!

  • Today's the anniversary. It was 33 years ago today that the most spectacular Arsenal win in the North London Derby took place. "Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! Oh what fun it is to see The Arsenal win away!"

  • Anfield '89 tops this, easy.

  • Arseblogger sent me !

  • @krakenwave no no no no, wait a second. i'm not someone who likes basketball. in fact, i think it's terribly boring. but we cannot say that it does not rely on intricate tactics. there might not be many sports as tactical as basketball. only that.

  • With modern balls that is not impressive, but with those old balls, that is incredible.

  • @krakenwave so thats why football and not basketball or nfl is the most popular spot in the world

  • @krakenwave Have you seen an NFL-game? Now that's intricate tactics, so I'm not sure if I can agree with you.

  • Never mind Brady. Anyone can fluke a curler.

What about the real star? The one and only Motty. Listen to that. Oh listen to that.

  • John Motson and Barry Davies - to this day (in my humble opinion) the greatest football commentators of all time, the late great Brian Moore deserves an honourable mention too, he died the same day that England beat Germany 5-0 in Germany.

    - "God, you are so cruel! (stated he risking accusations of hubris) - could'nt you have given the man some injury time to sit back and enjoy the spectacle - given all the defeats by Germany he had to commentate on down the years?"
