Junior Captains - Insulindependence Youth Program

This video, featuring Triabetes Triathlon Club's youth program participants, is one of a ten-part film series.

The "Give it A Shot" films follow ten individuals with Type 1 Diabetes who accepted the challenge of completing an Ironman triathlon to demonstrate that diabetes doesn't limit them and to educate others in the diabetic community that exercise is essential in management of the condition.

Triabetes is a program of the nonprofit organization Insulindependence, which aims to "revolutionize diabetes management" by inspiring people to set personal fitness goals. The organization's founders recognized the lack of leadership, in the area of fitness and recreation for people with diabetes and advocate that the most effective and influential system of support is the diabetic community itself and that they learned more from tracking and sharing experiences than in any doctor's office or medical journal. The captains have accepted the responsibility to help build this network.

Each team member sought out a young person in their area, between the ages of eight and twelve, who also has diabetes. These Triabuddies joined the athletes in Panama City, Florida in November and competed in their own triathon race. The kids will camp and hike together in Zion National Park, on a trip facilitated by Insulindependence, before they head to St. George to cheer on their athlete-mentors on Ironman race day. They started as strangers, but the Triabuddies symbolize the overall mission and in many cases, are the source of inspiration behind all 140.6 miles.
