On April 12, 1945, Staff Sergeant Henry Erwin grabbed a burning phosphorus flare and threw it from his bomber, saving the crew of The City of Los Angeles. Still in critical condition after his brave feat, he was awarded the Medal of Honor just one week later, on April 19, 1945.
