  • @capefeather Corporate donations have been against the law since 2007 for federal politics. Personal donations cannot (legally) exceed $1100 per year to a single candidate. You can donate an equal amount to a party & its affiliates for a grand total of $3300/yr, not counting leadership campaigns.

The amount that parties are permitted to spend during an election is also strictly controlled, ~$20M per party for the last federal election.

  • MERCER FOR PRIME MINISTER!

  • Telling the truth with a kick, keep doing what you are doing. I always watch RMR especially like your comment, thank you Rick Mercer.

  • Harper is a Machiavellian.

  • For those who aren't that aware of Rick Mercer, don't be fooled by the comments. Rick has criticized every party and probably sees no reason to bother donating to any single one. To the conservatives among you: you can be conservative without being complacent to lies and misinformation or following the Harper way. I know such people!

Let's also not forget that Rick is a COMEDIAN, and that it's silly to say that a news channel containing Kevin O'Leary and Rex Murphy is libreal-biased.

  • My god, this guy is actually 30s+... and yet he's also the same guy who made that immature, asinine video game comment. And the same guy who now picks a specific point apart to try to sound more legit. I almost fell for it, too...

  • @capefeather I do not belong and have never belonged to a political party.I have voted for every party at one time or another(except green),I even voted for Bob Rae back in the early 90's.I vote for who I think is best at the time and support them if I truly believe in what their aim is.The last 4 elections I have seen no other leader worthy enough to run the country. The Liberals promised the Sun and Moon above for years and were simply corrupt. The NDP are too Socialist...Who's left to choose?

  • @russfromdodge I get that people who support specific opposition parties should donate to them. But see, the vast majority of people don't belong to a political party. I doubt that most even really associate with a specific party enough to donate more than that $1 to it. But your condescending tone says it all; you're part of the loud minority who is too absorbed in political ideology to get that. All you see are evil, lazy left-wingers. I'll support average Canadians, not hate-driven ideologues.

  • @capefeather There are very strict limits on corporate donations, brought in by Jean Chretien in order to cripple his arch enemy,Paul Martin, who had a huge amount of corporate sponsors that could no longer help him.Tories get the vast majority of cash from their grass-roots,like myself.I donate $25 per election.Like most Tory supporters I will put my money where my mouth is,unlike those who prefer a Leftist view who feel the government should pay for everything so they can hold onto their cash.

  • The per-vote subsidy is an equal representation of votes that is lacking elsewhere. For most Canadians, that dollar is the extent of their support to the party for which they voted. They're not ideological enough to dig into their budgets for that purpose, nor are they rich enough to compete with the corporate donations that allow the Conservatives to outspend the other parties several times over (and that's just during elections). This is just another ideologue trap and I'm not falling for it.
