With Christmas fast approaching Ive decided to post some rare toy commercials from my favorite decade, the 70s. To kick things off, how about one of the earliest examples of a Toys R Us commercial. This ad aired in 71-72 timeframe when Toys R Us was owned by Interstate Stores. Interstate, which already owned several other chains (White Front and Topps Department Stores and Children's Bargain Town USA) purchased Toys R Us from founder Charles Lazarus in 1967. During this timeframe, Interstate was expanding its operations aggressively with stores in Washington DC and Baltimore markets. Lazarus remained to run the stores, eventually becoming CEO in the mid-70s, outlasting Interstates bankruptcy and re-emergence as Toys R Us, Inc. You can read an excellent summary of the history of Toys R Us over at the Pleasant Family Shopping Centers blog (you'll need to Google it or read my blog for the link).

  • I would love to walk through a Toy R Us circa 1972. The awesomeness of those great toys would rule.

  • gay

  • That was a commercial?

  • Those two humans don't want to grow up, but if they did, they would be a LOT less creepy.

  • Kids nowadays are retarded, The Giraffe was the TRU Icon.

  • why do mascots always have talk as if they came off the short bus? lol

  • Gayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayyaayayayayayayayayayayaya

  • Very low budget but that is what makes it great.

  • :O when the advert first popped up on my computer screen I seriously was freaked out and had to leave the chair...

  • wouldnt it of been cheaper not to waste your money on the tap dancers and just say toys r us the wolrds biggest toy store
