Make sure that you're using a good sequencer to compose with, always make sure that you're composing with the metronome click so that it's easier to quantise and so you can more easily play in time - try to use a wide variety of instruments, as not doing so could result in your work sounding the same.

No, actually. I played the melody in and worked up from there on this piece but the whereabouts of the melody drove me nuts.

Didn't get one in the end. My teacher told me that it was just a practice composition and that it wouldn't be entered for grading.

What is GCSE?

Well, in the UK, you have to pass exams in a certain number of subjects; these exams help you obtain your GCSE.
GCSE stands for: General Certificate of Secondary Education; I'm not sure what the system is in the US but if it helps, it's the studies that you take when you're about 15/16 years old.
