2009 Gumball 3000 Rally RaCe Car line up. The Gumball 3000 is an annual 3000 mile (5000 km) international road race which takes place on public roads, with a different 3000 mile route around the world each year. 120 Gumball 3000 cars participate, often driven by their owners. Now in its 11th year the event has grown into an established fixture on the popular culture calendar[citation needed] - annually attracting household names from music, film and sport to participate, including David Hasselhoff, Adrien Brody, Johnny Knoxville, and Tony Hawk. Although set up as a rally with no official timing, or prizes for reaching checkpoints first, during the rally, some participants have been fined for speeding and other traffic offenses by the police in countries they passed through. Cars participating have also been confiscated by the authorities of countries they pass through. In 2007 the rally was cancelled after a car participating in the rally was involved in a fatal collision with a non-participating vehicle. Although the organizers are careful to emphasize that it is a rally and not a race, it is sometimes referred to as a streetrace. The 2009 event is a 'coast to coast' road trip adventure from Los Angeles to Miami from May 2 - 8th. The event will also include free music concerts and car displays throughout the route[citation needed] in Santa Monica, Las Vegas, Santa Fe, Dallas, New Orleans and Miami. Drivers include David Hasselhoff, Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, Tony Hawk, and Bill "I've got Swine Flu" Wu. For 2009 Team Wu (Bill Wu, brother Allen Wu, Cindi and others) will be going in a former California Highway Patrol car complete with real CHP logos, working police lights, sirens, etc. They will disguise the car as "Swine Flu - Team Wu" or CDC Swine Flu Tactical Emergency Response Interception Vaccination Vehicle, and will be wearing haz-mat bio-safe suits. Team Wu will have ground tactical support by Eric Ward (former Gumball 3000 veteran and 2-time Gumball unofficial winner in 2006 and 2008) with his crew providing logistical support from a remote location. As the race enters Texas there are already rumors being circulating about the Gumballer crazy antics. Team Wu is 80 miles ahead of the 2nd place car! The "most hilarious car award" (in true Gumball Spirit) should go to Team Wu for saving the country (one party at a time) of the Swine Flu by decontaminating each location as they pass through. In north Texas, a Bugati got pulled over with 2 Porsche 911 Turbo's for doing 171mph (in a 75mph zone). That would be the fastest REAL recorded ticket in Texas history!
