Tourism trap for Honduras' Garifunas - 20 Jul 08

In central America, the Honduran government and private developers have launched a $100 million project to build the tourism industry.

They plan to build hotels, luxury villas and a golf course on the pristine white beaches of Tela Bay.

But the project is threatening an Afro-Caribbean ethnic group called the Garifuna, which is unique to this coastal region of Central America.

Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo visited the community on the northern Caribbean coast and has their story.

@choclatemellons You are absolutely right. Tela Bay consist of Tornabe, Maimi, Trunfo, San Juan and Barra Viaje. Trunfo and San Juan rejected the plan but the rest of them accepted it. Little did they know what they were getting themselves into because now their land are owned by people from Canada and Europe. The project is huge sooner or later they will get kicked out beceause they will become a disturbance.

They use to say in Honduras the cities are for ladinos/meztisos/whites people and coast for niggers. For many years they wanted nothing to do with these coastal villages and people. We were exiled and left alone forgoten in Central American after the English and French stole our land in St Vincent and Grenadines and now these EuroTrash/white devils want to steal our mother-land and inslaves us again? oh hell no!!!!
