Is not his crew just as liable, surly they knew none of this testing had taken place. I doubt any of these war birds have done this testing.

NTSB Chair Hersman's briefing on the 2011 Reno Air Race fatal accident is admirably concise, thorough, and compelling.

The tail wheel strut of the P-51D aircraft is, according to Erection & Maintenance Instructions AN01-60JE-2, on its page 130, supported in the up position by a simple lever, a plate having a notch on the top which engages with a small roller on top of the tail landing gear strut. The lever is actuated for to release the tail gear from the up position by a cable connecting to the main gear retracting mechanism.

Quote AAF P51 pilot manual 51-127-5

"The aerodynamic characteristics of the P-51D are such that snap rolls

cannot be satisfactorily performed. This has been proved by a long

series of test flights. So don't try any snap rolls in an attempt to

show that you're the guy who can do them. You'll invariably wind up in

    a power spin-and that's bad."

Its possible Jimmy bank hard to stay on course and that quick maneuver

aggravated the roll upset which caused roll reversal and the violent

    pitch up...

    NTSB Thank you

I wonder how the trim tab hinge failed on the fixed tab and why the elevator trim changed on the actuated tab. It is know an aircraft in trouble is directed to climb out the course path to safe airspace. The Roll appeared not to be abrupt on the first upset as aileron control may have broken. The trim was changed to climb the aircraft to safety as it is electrical and does not require stick movement. The last roll may have been by the pilot, the roll rate control is unknown.
