This short video captures some of the atmosphere and romance of the historic town of Dartmouth in Devon, England. It was filmed in 1987 when the replica of Sir Francis Drake's famous ship "The Golden Hind" sank on its way to Dartmouth. It was sailing a short distance from Brixham for repairs but sprang a leak on the way, was rescued and ended up sitting on the river bed awaiting its final fate. The replica had been a tourist attraction for years gathering a multitude more onlookers after this last event! A new ship was built at Brixham shortly after using the base of an old Thames barge.

The original Tudor ship in Drake's time circumnavigated the world in 1577-1580 and did much better than this one. The town of Dartmouth is also famous for being the Port from which the Pilgrim Father's set sail as well as a well known pirate haunt. In more recent times the TV series the Onedin Line was filmed there.
