Due to the first season's ratings struggles (and despite the fact that ratings did improve by the end of the 1994-95 season, hence the show getting a renewal), David E. Kelley and company believed that if they gave CH more of an "ER" image and style, the show would then start to be further competitive anywhere on the CBS schedule. While the S1 appeal was gone, further compounded by Patinkin leaving as a regular just two months into S2, CH still had much to offer until S6 began...IMHO.

Season 1 of CH was fantastic. But when they went to Season 2, I can't remember a more obvious "sell out" in TV. Hope got creamed by ER ratings-wise in the first season, even though I felt Hope was infinitely a better show. And so the 2nd season of Hope rolls around and suddenly this ER-like theme song replaced the melodic original one, and suddenly episodes are peppered with those stupid ER-like sequences of samba music, handheld camera whips as they rush gurneys down halls.

Oh and season 1 has MANDY PATINKIN and not CHRISTINE LAHTI, so the picture's wrong too.
