"Because of my face, which was washed with soap and nothing else, Americans never saw me as Peer Gynt. They always saw me as a sister, a mother, even as a nun. My falling in love with Roberto [Rossellini] was too much of a betrayal for them. Don't forget it happened in 1948; now it would be different. The new generation... reacts with astonishment when they hear the story of the hate that burst around me. They ask: 'Why?' And when they are told, they smile saying: 'Is that all? So what?'

- Ingrid Bergman interviewed in Look Magazine, 1968

  • I remember watching this when it first aired and was deeply touched by the comments made by Colleen Dewhurst. Both of those women were amazing actresses who left indelible marks on film. We are so lucky now to have such easy access to their marvelous works.

  • Thank you for posting this beautiful story of Ingrid Bergman. It is rare to see such a combination of beauty, sex appeal yet innocence, sincerity, and the capacity for intimacy on so many levels. Her vulnerabity and complimentary steel provide warmth and hope for what being human can mean in an often cold and uncaring universe.

  • @fiordiligicymraeg According to two bios I've read about her, yes. She returned home again one final time when some of her ashes were spread across the sea off the coast of Sweden and some were buried in the Bergman grave at Norra begravningsplatsen (Northern Cemetary) in Stockholm. There is a little gravestone on the grass there. One day I'd love to visit.

  • Thanks for posting this wonderful and touching portrait of Ingrid Bergman. What an amazing life she had. Years go by so quickly.......

  • August 29, 2010 - Happy Birthday Ingrid - allow me to address one thing that wasn't clear/

Senator Charles Percy, Republican of Illinois, entered into the Congressional Record, in 1972, an apology for the attack made on Ingrid Bergman 22 years earlier by the Democrat Senator. They bowed to Ingrid, apologizing for the bunch of cowards that dared attacking such a brave, genuine, great artist she was.

R.I.P. Ingrid. No one will ever be able to touch you again; only the love and admiration stay.

  • I remember seeing this on TV years ago- such a great portrait of a wonderful woman. But I'm always confused with the ending - they make it look as if she died in Stockholm, when actually she died in London. Was she really in Stockholm a week before her death??
