The Eagle Grins is a loose quotation from the old blues song
' Nobody Knows You. '

Just being me is almost more than I can bear to be
But I'm alright so far..only another little stretch
And then who knows what that'll bring...

The apples...very green...cold bitter summer
Wasps full of sting...things not ripening
Closed onions mean and tight..
Bracken on the run
Grey on grey...don't tell me that's an inner thing,
Bleakest Land
Day after day
Dark in the heavens ..a static sea of cloud
They do not move they do not go...they sit
Like a great wall of ancient times..stone wall..
.....heavy, lingering
Extended gloom in the skies.

Nothing changes..
Normans to the conquer..Turks to the slaughter
Generals on the Go Get Kill
With their bleached out Dollar Bills.

Goin' to squeeze that Dollar till the Eagle grins
...drools blood
Drawn from eye to chin.
Did you hear it squeal upon the wind ?

History's a repeating thing...it comes ...again..
But next time...I'll be gone.

  • Melancholy, but so very beautiful, because of the conscience that somehow defies the sense of mortality. And how right you are about the Generals and their "bleached out dollar bills"...

  • @GWatsonreadings Thanks GW ;)

  • You are a Goddess...I love how you recite. Very beautiful, indeed...such fine poetry this is. Bravo!

  • @ladyofire Thank you for the lovely comment...!

  • Well, once I lived the life of a millionaire,

Spent all my money, didn't have any cares.

Took my friends out for a a mighty fine time

Boot leg whiskey, champagne and wine

Then I began to fall so low,

Lost all my good friends had no place to go

If I get my hands on a dollar again

I'm gonna hold on to it until the old eagle grins

It's a strong image for sure. And the gloom is certainly wall-like . I guess the garden has seen it all before and just accepts. Strange isn't it?

  • @Caspar33 I love those lines too Casper...love love...And wise words of yours...I guess the garden has seen it all before...and unlike grumpy me...accepts it !

  • Dear K. again a touching video and poetry; when the Eagle Grins it spreads its shadow on our premises too...

  • @OceanTownPictures it is like a canary...now that you mention it...I agree...Dead things ? Well a lot of my poetry is dreary...I keep wanting to reflect my 'sunny' nature...lol....which I kinda have...but the dark always seems to find its way out...Maybe it is easier to write...and I just need to improve !!
