The Obama administration is set to propose a new system for authenticating people, organizations and infrastructure on the Web. The online authentication and identity management system would be targeted at the transactional level -- for example, when someone logs into their banking website or completes an online e-commerce purchase.

Making such a system effective, however, will require creating an "identity ecosystem," backed by extensive public/private cooperation, said White House cybersecurity coordinator Howard Schmidt, delivering the opening keynote speech at the Symantec Government Symposium 2010 in Washington on Tuesday.

Same thing with "government funded universal healthcare" the government will then be able to tell you what to eat, what you can and can't do and where you go on the grounds that if its bad for your health you can't do it. Example: The government issues food stamps and tells you what you can and can't buy. (If someone was trying to spend the money on alcohol, cigarettes, etc then they shouldn't be qualifying for the food stamps anyways).

Isn't a National ID card system a GOOD thing? I an official Ontario proof of ID photo card. Can't you Yanks see the benefits of one smart card to act as your card for common state and Federal level services? To me, only those with something to hide (criminality) would oppose not being so anonymous.
