Scott Noel, a professor at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, is one of the best figurative painters working today. In this film, he discusses his painterly techniques with the backdrop of his March '09 show at the Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia.
What a great thing YT is to bring a beautiful vid like this into my living room like this that I would never have seen otherwise, I love it when an artist explains techniques this way, big thanks, art energy works for me.

I had the pleasure of studying with this guy years ago. He's an amazing teacher and technician. It was really nice to hear him speak about his process again.

Obviously demonstrates a level of skill, but I really don't get these paintings. Where is the idea? What is the purpose of these rather random placements of assortments of banal objects? The body of work is consistent, but I'm afraid rather consistently bad. They lack depth of insight, personal involvement, a sense of purpose, and intellectual challenge.

i really appreciate the confirmation of making multiple attempts at a subject. it's always great to have an artist give insight into his process.

This artist paints a lot like Lucien Freud.

Yeah you can totally tell that he batches the paint... it explains the flatness and simplicity of color, which is an eerie quality of the work.
