Did you watch the video @TwistnShift? The Volt cruised through snow even with those Eco tires. Plus, if the Administration gets CAFE fuel standards rolling look for a lot more of every car to be Eco.

I am in CT and will be getting a Volt VERY soon an looking so forward to it.. Temps are not so cold here for the most part and i am 7mins from my job, "GE" of all places and thay have a company Volt and Leaf and places to charge.. So i will be driving on there Dime most days :-)))

Well actually I figured out how to change the setting so it doesn't do that unless its really really cold - like below 18 F / -8 C. Thing is the heater uses a constant 5-7 kW while on battery and takes a while to start up (if gas is used then the engine inefficiencies supply heat to the cabin), so its a measure to try and get the cabin warm on a cold day.

The engen gen will start to warm the coolent of BOTH the engine and the batery coolent. A Volt when the engine comes on might need to go right to 2 or 3000RPM from the start, say if your driving down the road at 70mph. Do that with your car, start it cold and run it under load at 3,000plus rpm can cause damage. so it starts to warm up everything with coolent to operating temp.

I noticed that below 36 F / 2 C the gas engine comes on to warm the battery... is it because the battery's efficiency is compromised too much due to the cold?
