In northern Honduras poor rural farmers have been utterly dependent on slave-like employment on vast palm tree plantations, working long hours and earning barely enough to survive thanks to wealthy, corrupt businessmen and plantation owners.
On a piece of disused land, a group of 519 families have formed a cooperative called La Confianza. They are campaigning for land on which to farm, and ultimately the freedom to earn a living.
I think it is clear from the video and evidence gathered by NGOs and human rights defenders that these people have no option but to stake a claim to land in their local area to farm. Is it not the case that their claim to a small amount of land to settle and cultivate in peace was being seriously considered by the (legitimately elected) government of Honduras before the military coup in 2009? Strange coincidence.

The palm trees are fully grown, at least 5 years have passed since they were planted, Who planted them? Why wasn´t there objection during the time the palm tress was developing, why do these people claim the land now, not before when there wasn´t anything planted on it. What does the goverment of Honduras do for these people, that they need help (and donations) from NGO´s such as trocaire?
