This is one of two rattle snakes not far from a shelter in Harriman State Park. This one is melanistic, the other is light colored and just as large.

  • this is in ney york?

  • @trickshots12

Sorry for the delay in replying to your comment. This is New York State about 50 miles north of New York City on the WEST side of the Hudson River - not far from West Point. HTH

  • CatskillMountainView, I hope you are wrong. It's a chilling thought. Thanks for caring about this misunderstood species.

  • Jaker2882, thanks for your comment. Luckily NY State is wise enough to protect rattlesnakes. This part of the Hudson Valley has more rattlesnakes than some other areas of NY. I agree with your sentiments - let's hope rattlesnakes and many other endangered species survive and thrive.

  • I heard the snake first. I was scared the very first time this happened, about 30 years ago.

But then I met a rattlesnake expert and learned that unless you step on them or corner them, rattlesnakes are quite shy.

My favorite rattlesnake footage is from August 2007, rattlesnakes mating. I also learned that they give birth to live young.

  • @NatureWriterJJ Thanks for the info

  • @phreshboii1000 I have no idea. You might try to contact the Herpetology of a local College or University to find out.

  • Do you know if this type of snake is in Syracuse New York?

  • I only saw 2 adults at my local densite this year and I went there 5 times.I have been observing rattlers here for 20 years. I'm afraid the species is not going to survive.

  • Isn't it amazing that we live in a cold northern state and yet we can see big rattlesnakes such as these. Lets hope they are there for future generations to see as well. The timber rattlesnake is becoming scarcer every year do to habitat destruction and collection or killing. its is now considered threatened with extinction
