Great Blue Heron on the Mattawoman Creek catching a river herring. These herring swim all the way from the ocean up into the fresh waters of Mattawoman Creek, can lay thousands of eggs, and are a very important part of the food chain. According to Maryland DNR, Mattawoman is the most productive tributary of the Chesapeake Bay for anadromous fish. Mattawoman is one of the few streams left in Maryland that river herring return to, but according to American Rivers, it is also the fourth most endangered river in America!
