Canadian NDP leader Jack Layton has called for Canadian soldiers to pull out of Afghanistan by February. Meanwhile, Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper - and our generals, NATO, our allies and the UN - call for us to continue the mission. This video calls Layton's prescription for our foreign policy into serious doubt.

"You do realize that it was US/NATO intervention that had brought the Taliban to power in the first place?"

No, the abandonment of Afghanistan after the Soviets were defeated that helped bring in the Taliban.

"Withdrawing troops does not necessarily mean abandoning the cause."

Yes, that's precisely what it means

"Why not send in more social workers and skilled professionals to get Afghanistan back on its feet...."

Because the Taliban will behead them all.

  • @bohortdegaunes "By reading this comment I'm certain that you've never been to Afghanistan. "

I've seen enough documentaries and read enough news articles to postulate that there will always be Afghans who dislike us. They may not dislike the individual people in uniforms, but they sure as hell don't like a breach of their land.

"Rest assured that our troops do everything in their power to be liked by the population and destroy only the enemy."

The point is not for soldiers to be liked.

  • @unifieddynasty By reading this comment I'm certain that you've never been to Afghanistan. Rest assured that our troops do everything in their power to be liked by the population and destroy only the enemy...

You don't even know what you're talking about. Thanks for coming out though.

  • What you all forget is that we need the military missions to sharpen our troops and equipment. What is better than a limited engagement with someone tht can't beat you?

What would we do with our bombs and weapons if we could not try them out somewhere?

It is because of Afghanistan that our military got new equipment, airplanes etc. the pain was worth the effort.

The NDP has no place in government, they are the old commie party under a new name and only loonie lefties would support them.

  • @jnarvey "Because the Taliban will behead them all."

Because the only Taliban still left in army-occupied zones are those who joined up after their families and friends were killed because of friendly fire. Because every single day, young Afghans will wake up and see foreign troops on their ancestral land, forever mocking their existence as a supposedly conquered nation.

Make no mistake, we the Canadians were not there to conquer them. Perhaps we should start acting like humanitarians.

  • @jnarvey "No, the abandonment of Afghanistan after the Soviets were defeated that helped bring in the Taliban."

The Taliban were the Mujahideen. The Mujahideen were the rebels supported by NATO who were waging war against the USSR. Hence, NATO actively supplied the Taliban with logistics and training.

"Yes, that's precisely what it means"

Then I suppose you're losing a war every time a Canadian soldier goes on leave. And I guess Hitler won, after we left Europe.

  • You do realize that it was US/NATO intervention that had brought the Taliban to power in the first place? And you do realize that Layton's predictions were correct? We are accomplishing absolutely nothing in Afghanistan right now - we build schools, the partisans blow up the schools.

Withdrawing troops does not necessarily mean abandoning the cause. Instead, why not send in more social workers and skilled professionals to get Afghanistan back on its feet... instead of making us look like thugs.

  • al qaeda =/= nazi's

  • Haha what a joke this video is.
