The Fireships album, to my mind, is Peter Hammill's masterpiece. He finally eschewed that aimless jazz-prog noodling in favour of strong melodies. Gone are the tuneless screeching sax noises, and raspy high-pitch shouting that marred his earlier work.

Hi Rinlew! Thank you for your input. I know about VDGG and maybe it was via my interest for their great music I found out about Peter Hammill.
I have some of his albums now and most of them are excellent.

In the 70's he was in progressive rock band Van Der Graaf Generator (VDGG). After the break up of the group, he has recorded highly emotional albums like AND CLOSE AS THIS, IN A FOREING TOWN, SKIN, FIRESHIPS.
Even in the 70's he recorded great "solo" stuff (with his band VDGG): THE FUTURE NOW, CHAMELEON IN THE SHADOW OF THE NIGHT, THE SILENT CORNER AND THE EMPTY STAGE.
With such uncommercial music, it was expected that he would be broadly unknown, but he is great.
