Via http://www.dermtv.com - Some people think that when they begin to see more hair fall out of their head than usual, it can be a result of "over-shampooing." Dr. Schultz will explain why that just isn't true.

  • Hi Dr. I'm African- American and thats a question I've always wonderd about. Is it okay to shampoo my hair every other day or not?

  • @MsLoren10 It certainly is okay and not harmful to shampoo your hair every other day. Enjoy your clean scalp!

  • ive got a really good question.. i got hairlost and its really itchy ..i wash my hair every day with shampoo,i also tryed diffrent shampoos, even olive oil at one point ..whats causing my scalp to itch so bad and making my hair fall out i have a big problem with my hair and so far nobody helped by trying to figurwe it out.. please help if u have an idea i really need it..and it even seems like its sweaty ..or maybe oily a lil

  • @lilmikey23333 Itching scalp and hair loss is often caused by seborrheic dermatitis which is most effectively treated with tar-based shampoos. When that's not sufficient, then physician prescribed topical cortisone preparations will help. If in addition, the hair loss is also due to genetically-caused balding, then in addition to controlling the seborrhea, in males, Propecia may be helpful.

  • Thank you so much. Please reply to this, I am 16 years old. and my hair seems to be receding quite alot at the front of my forehead. It is definately noticable and is lowering my self confidence. I went to the doctors, and they said that my scalp is quite dry in that area, they gave me a shampoo called capasal, therapeutic shampoo. But i forgot to ask, if my hair has fallen out from scratching and dry scalp, is there a chance that it would grow back in that area?

  • @DirtyGarbageKid: If the hair loss is in fact from what you say, then it can grow back. But, you may also have a combination of hair loss from male pattern hair loss (hereditary and from hormones) combined with what you mentioned.

  • hi i am just wondering if NIOXIN shampoo and scalp treatment for fine or thinning hair could infact do the opposite and cause hair loss? i have had a sudden change in the texture and look of my hair over the past couple of weeks, and when running my hands through it it is impossible not to pull out full length strands of hair, it feels very thinned out and also looks thinner and less full near my temples, my hair is easy breakable and looks frizzy like i have a full head of split hands?

  • i have a fine head of hair at 47 -- i guess its the luck of the draw when it comes to genetics- i wash my hair everyday for years had no problems

  • hi Dr. well, it looks like my hair is falling little too much then what you said it soppose to so i put oil on my hair and scaple. Do you think puting oil on my head time to time makes hair fall more? thank you very much..

  • shampoo everyday cause hair loss.. what is he talking about????

Go no poo and your hair loss reduce tremendously

  • Do you know if using vasline or Aquaphor really makes your lashes grow longer and thicker?

  • @davidvelezzz I was also on accutane a few years back, I didn't notice I was losing my hair, but you should try using a good shampoo without chemicals in it. The chemicals in shampoo dry your hair and scalp out even worse. Try looking around for a shampoo with a little bit of oil in it, and don't trust the stuff that claims to be "moisturizing".

If you can't find anything, try using a little bit of moisturizer in your hair.

  • Even ultra famous celebrities like Brad Pitt, who has great hair and seems to be retaining it through his aging doesn't use shampoo. He said so in an interview with howard stern. I just use warm water and massage gently. My hair is clean, and maintains moisture very well because there is a small ammount of oil on my scalp and hair.

  • This may be true for some, if not most individuals, but most shampoos contain a lot of chemicals and detergents that are highly toxic, some of these chemicals and cleaners are even found in household cleaning products, and floor cleaners. Shampoo also contains acids. All of these things can cause hair to become dry and brittle, causing damage and dryness to your hair, and scalp.

If you're going to use a shampoo, use something with natural ingredients. I personally am on the "no poo" regimen.

  • I've got a question, I am on my fourth month of Accutane. According to my doctor, hair loss is a side effect of accutane. I have noticed that my hair has been breaking off very easy and getting thinner by the day. I havent gone bald or had bald patches, the only thing is that my hairline is receding more than normal. I noticed a change in texture, it is dry and brittle. It also doesnt get oily anymore. Is shampooing going to dry it out even more and will my hair grow back?

  • When hair follicles are tender due to seborrheic dermatitis and hair falls out, will those hairs regrow? I've been battleship with SD for almost two years and having to use Clobex (.05%) just to keep it at bay. I've noticed an extreme thinning of my hair, as well as 20 hairs+ on my pillow and from shampooing. I can't slow it down! The dermatologist says to use the steroid indefinitely, every other day to keep SD at bay. Question: will the hair regrow after such loss/trauma?
