Odissi is an ancient Indian dance and has its roots in dance yoga (Natya Yoga). Nilanjana is based in the US and trains with Guru Mitra Purkayastha. She follows the gharana( mahari tradition) of Guru Muralidhar Majhi of Kolkata, India.Guruji is the recepient of several prestigious awards notable among them being the Padmashree and the Sangeet natak academy award. At present he is heading the odissi dept at Rabindra Bharati university in Kolkata.

  • @hippocampus23 Thanks for watching the clipping. My dance style and the pallavi I have performed is based on the gharana of Guru Muralidhar Majhi, who has been trained directly by Guru Pankaj Charan Das. As you may know each of the gurus then developed their own unique style, as they worked towards popularizing this dance.

    Finding an odissi teacher in the midwest has proven to be very difficult.

  • It was great to see that someone has produced such an elegant video of the Odissi dance. The setting is gorgeous and the dancer's moves are very fluid. Looking forward to seeing the piece in its entirity
