I remember when this song came out even though I was only 4.We had the single and I still remember how it looked with the green apple on one side and the white core on the b side.Long live the Beatles!
I agree with NakedReporta... well documented where they lip-synced or played/sang to pre-recorded material.. which is the case here.. u can here Paul singing to himself in spots. Even with the broadcast of All You Need Is Love, some of it was pre-recorded.. not meant to be negative, everyone did it back then..
@showtuneful What, for videos? They lipsynced all the time for videos. This particular one, however, the singing is live over a mix of live instrumentation and pre-recorded track (including double-tracked vocals and a guide vocal at the intro). But for the record, the Beatles lipsynced on multiple occasions for TV appearances like this one.
Paul has a lot more energy toward the end than in the other version of the video. They did twelve takes and the other video you can see Paul getting tired at the end.
@richgilb: Yeah, the whole lip synching thing has gone back and forth over the years. I'll ask Paul the next time I see him if he sang over the track or not. He's got a great memory for that kind of stuff. ;o)
I don't think any performer hates lip synching more than Iggy. When he was forced to do it he'd purposely mess up and make it obvious that he wasn't singing live. A couple of the vids on YT are really funny. Well, not to the producers of the shows . . .
@YouzTube99 You can hear at the very beginning where the recorded track (which is straight off of the album) comes in - the sound level drops tremendously. Although I'm sure they did have an ambient mic or two designed to pick up the crowd cheering and John/Paul making off hand remarks.
If a band was caught doing this today it'd be (and has been) a big scandal. But it was necessary to do back then because the technology to properly mix and transmit live multitracked sound was in its infancy.
I think it's both. I suspect they played over a recorded track and the mics were open. Listen at 01:48 when Paul's voice breaks a bit on the word "found". Also, at 03:23 you can hear John say, "Come up!" to the crowd.
Watch the alternate take of this: youtube.com/watch?v=KqlgeAaTA60 and notice Paul's screaming after the official lyric ends is different.
Finally, the mics are clearly live for 'Revolution': youtube.com/watch?v=Q7EIV8AG-jo
