Cosmos is a favorite late-summer/early autumn flower in Japan. In many places, fields and waste areas are seeded solidly with cosmos, to the delight of camera-toting visitors. In Gifu Prefecture, Route 158 from Kamikochi to Takayama is a flower-highway with the roadside dotted with patches of cosmos. Even the ski area at hoonokidaira (朴の木平 スキー場) adds to the floral scene — in late summer, the lower ski slopes are solidly blanketed with a massed planting of cosmos, just for the enjoyment of tourists.
