@rottmist how much of joke they are? What? We wouldn't have half the awesome music or musicians if covers didnt exist. Composing is a skill, like anything else, and when developing a skill, you gotta start somewhere. Don't compare a cover to it's original song. It's not meant to be compared, just enjoy tunes for what they are.

Anyone who knows the decemberists totally came when they busted a fat decemberists nut on this track.

@hunter047 I think the emotion hurts the essence of the song. In the original it was really emotionless, she didn't do too much modulation or change up her technique from verse to verse, and the song seemed like it was just plodding along, she in fact sounded bored with what she was singing about. Which I think fit it perfectly, though as I said below, arguing differences in the covers is a waste of time considering how much of a joke they are.

Weeds has created like 20 covers of this song, and they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all sound just the same. Then people take these covers which are played by different bands but are still all clearly the same tired song, and they argue about which one is best, and buy covers of a song that has already been done a dozen or so times, not even realizing the intense irony of the situation. Listen to the lyrics again and take another look around the inside of your metaphoric box.

This version has more emotion to it. You can tell from the change as he sings about the people that conformity is not necessarily a good thing. Someone did an animation to this version called "Animating Boxes at 3AM." Sums it up pretty well actually.
