  • Very interesting - but Anand decides to overlook a key factor. For the millions of undernourished Indians to come out of poverty, it is important that people who can create value and wealth in the global system reside in India. To serve India and the poor in India, it is not important to send five hours a week attending to them - one does service by simply staying back in India, enduring the few hardships that still remain (like bad roads etc) and create wealth in this country.

  • Superb analysis. The tension that arises between the making of the nation and its reflection on the self is one that bears close observation. From such awareness about the creation of the nation and/or self cult perhaps the "stupid poverty" can be tackled. Then we can get on to the massive task of sorting out the really messy stuff. Thanks for the post! By the way I am an Indian-Kiwi, I rather like the word 'dingy'.
