@Zcrazy123 or maybe he could have amnesia or something, and he makes mario weapons, and you can go looking for items that slowly start to bring his memory back, and then fights mario and party. When mario defeats smithy, he drops his hammer.

@321cheeseman actually, paper mario was originally being developed by Square-enix as a sequel to super mario rpg. However, square signed a contract with sony in the middle of development to only publish games for the playstation, so square left the game with nintendo, who handed it to intelligent systems to finish.

I'd love it if the Smithy we see (and hear) here was in a new Mario RPG (a more serious one, like the first, as opposed to M&L style humorous) He shouldn't be the last boss, but rather...the last boss aught to 'revive' him-as Mario and crew go traversing through some dark abyssal wasteland, suddenly the ground splits at their feet, and a broken, battered Smithy claws his way out; his eyes red with fury-burrrning...seeeething...bereft of logical thought, vengance drawing him to madness....

THEY NEED TO BRING BACK SMITHY or at least Reference him like In a new mario RPG name one of Marios Weapons Smithy's Hammer.
