    The original epilator was called EpiLady (this was back in the 80's...) and it was advertised just like many of today's made-for-TV products.. Joan Rivers literally put the company out of business when she appeared on the Tonight Show (and other programs) and talked about how the machine yanked out wads of hair by the roots from her legs and armpits . The gist of her monologue:

    ow! ow! ow! ow! ow! ow! ow! ow! OW! OW! OW! OW! OW!

    I guess things haven't changed much in 30 years...
