Culturally Relevant Church?

Relevant means to connect with the matter in hand
Culture - a particular form or stage of civilization, as that of a certain nation or period: Greek culture
the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly, pursuits, etc.
*thank you dictionary.com

In the church we have taken it to mean that we have to be high tech, lights, camera, crazy music, cool haircuts, and trendy clothes... if that is pertinent to your culture then cool, but to do those things as a church doesn't mean you are being culturally relevant

Understand -- churches and ministries have to have a grasp on the culture they are trying to effect. The area in which they live, what people are like, what they believe, what they love to do, what they are attracted to. How they make their livings, what they do for entertainment. What their needs and wants are. How they communicate.

Communicate -- if we don't understand the culture in which we live we will have no idea on how to communicate to them in a matter in which they will understand. We have the most important incredibly relevant messages to anybody, any culture, anywhere, and at any time but it is often times miscommunicated because it's done so poorly. We try to present it as if it were 40years ago. It's been said that Daniel "spoke Babylonian but thought like a Jew" meaning he was able to get his point across in a way that people could understand, but it did not compromise his beliefs, and he was able to influence a nation.

Influence -- if we don't understand and are unable to communicate we will be unable to influence. Churches and ministries should have major influence on society. Influence comes from invitation, investment and involvement in people's lives... or in your cultures. In the world not of the world, but we got to be in it to effect it, again knowing what people need and then meeting their needs. Paul understood Greek thought, he was able to communicate in a way that they would understand, and therefor had major influence and became the apostle to the gentiles.

The message of Jesus is relevant to every culture, to every person's life!
So please as ministries/churches lets understand the culture we are surrounded by, figure out how to communicate to them, and begin to influence them with the most incredibly relevant message ever.

I will talk more on how to turn a culture coming soon...

  • Good words! Desi

  • @ibizajoey No he did not lie. You misunderstood the message. A doctor does not have to be ill to save someone who is ill. Jesus came to save us from every type of sexual addiction and this remains true till today. I suppose, what Paul meant was trying to find a way to earn the people's attention and respect to his message.

  • @josk1d did he become homosexual to homo's? If not, then he didn't become ALL things. He lied. I believe he probably did and enjoyed it.

  • Paul even said, "I became all things to all men so that I may win some to Christ."

  • "Christ will never be cool. Terrifying, life changing, shocking, and iconoclastic, but never cool. Jesus is not my homeboy. The gospel will always be "relevant" but never trendy."
