I uploaded this 1965 clip just for fun. Look for a very young Donna McKechnie [wearing a red-striped shirt]. Ignore Patty's singing [no offense!!!]

  • Does anybody know who did the singing for Neely O'Hara in Valley of the Dolls? It couldn't have been Patty, since her voice is barely passable.

    Mary-

  • I'm sure lots of people know, in fact I know...

Oh, I guess that YOU may want to know! Patty's vocals were dubbed by pop/jazz singer Margaret Whiting.

  • This movie is on TCM on Sept 12.

  • I own the DVD, but if I didn't - If you pay for my digital cable I'd be able to watch it. I'm at war with Cablevision and refuse to give them ONE EXTRA PENNY of my own!!

  • Wow, the trailer alone has Charles Lane (RIP this month at 102 years of age), VO by Mason Adams (of Smucker's fame); Donna McKechnie, Jim Backus, choreography by David Winters (I think), shmaltz, a big dog, Patty Duke looking like a lesbian gym teacher, Jane Greer (!), the word 'sex', and gay guys dancing in the locker room. Wow. Clearly this is the greatest motion picture ever made. Thanks for posting.

  • Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes... no - one boy is straight. I love Jim Backus' line "I don't know why we sent her away to school when she could have done the same thing right here and much cheaper!" It was quite bold [for the '60s] to actually say the word "SEX."

I posted the trailer for all the reasons you mentioned!!!

  • All she needed was the dot earrings and she would've been a full-fledged woman gym-teacher!

  • wow, it amazes me that there are films like this that we never get to see on British TV, but are worth a look.

  • I just absolutely lovvvvedddd this movie as a kid...it inspired me all the way to the fridge...really...I did love it..I remember going outside and trying to let "some beat " inspire me...plus...just loved some of those songs...I was so hurt by some GUY...that funny butterflies really hit home when he BROKE UP w/ me...ahhh...memory...lane......

  • @JohnnyGNV thanks so much for answering my question. I was watching this clip again and couldn't help but laugh...gosh Patty looks terrible as a blonde. She looked so nice in her tv show with her brown hair.

  • @4MaryAnna Studio vocalist Gail Heidman did the singing voice for Patty in VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. In the same movie, singer Margaret Whiting provided a singing voice to Susan Hayward for her one song.

  • @jmdocs : don't forget, the older sister is played by Susan Seaforth-Hayes, a daytime staple on "Days of Our Lives" since the late 60's.

  • They showed this on the 3:30 Movie one afternoon in 1979. It was fine as it started--the theme they played over the opening credits was o.k. ("She wears clothes like a Billie should wear")--and wow, what a cute hair style she had: it looked really contemporary, not like the flip she wore on "Patty Duke." I got as far as Dick Sargent making small talk with Billie's Dad--to me, the general gist of his talk during the 70s seemed very dated & filled with gender discrimination, so I turned it off.

  • 9 years old...crouching under a coffee table in my mothers living room while she was on the phone in the next room. I fell in...lust..with Patty Duke...at that age. Never knew the name of this movie...until now. Thank you...for bringing back memories of my childhood.

  • @rodanvideo Actually, singer Gail Heideman dubbed in vocals for Patty Duke in "Valley of the Dolls"--not Margaret Whiting.
