John Denver- Paradise from Denver's 1972 album Rocky Mountain High. This is a cover of John Prine's song by the same name that had been released a year prior. It is a protest song against the destruction caused by coal mining in Kentucky's Green River valley (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradise_(John_Prine_song).

Lyrics:
When I was a child my family would travel
Down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there's a backwards old town that's often remembered
So many times that my memories are worn.

Chorus:
And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

Well, sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Adrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill.

Repeat Chorus:

Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man.

Repeat Chorus:

When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am.

Repeat Chorus

  • I love this song. My mother used to sing my siblings and I, this song to bed. 3 Memories(:

  • @LeslieSteeg no thanks.

  • @mbcNOOFS fuck off

  • @LeslieSteeg Oh, I was just curious to see if you wanted to talk any more about how much better you are than me. It seems like a very passionate and fulfilling past-time.

  • @mbcNOOFS what's to elaborate when you say John Denver is full of shit and I say so are you?

  • @LeslieSteeg hahaha, care to elaborate?

  • @mbcNOOFS so are you

  • @dannyraystewart1 They'll always hate you for that - they can't help it - it's in their DNA .

  • Anybody that doesn't like this great song needs a glasssectomy -- a glass belly button because they've got their heads so far up their asses they can't see where they are going .

  • @mbcNOOFS LOL platter, that is a movie reference. I don't believe NOOFS meant to disparage Mr. Denver in any way.
