Here are a few tips for High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography. Good fun.

Check out my gallery of HDR images at:

I have a cool podcast with Juan Pons on the site, too!

  • The herd is so cute! You would miss out if you didn't take any pictures of those sheep!

  • BTW Rick, I have found that bracketing 5 shots at +/- 2EV rather than 3 shots yields far more amazing results. Have you tried 5 rather than 3?

  • qazahmed,

In the process dialog play around with the settings for the Details Enhancer and Tone Compressor. It is a bit of trial and error till you get a setting that you like ... once you get there you can save the settings as your new default.

IMHO, the secret to HDR is restraint. It's really easy to overdo it and make your image look like a cartoon. Be subtle and try different settings.

Perhaps Rick could do a video showing his favorite settings. What do you think Rick?

  • when I use photomatix, I end up with my pictures looking so "fake" and unnatural :(

    what should I do?

  • Great tips! Thanks

I have got a couple of your books too.

    Love your work :D
