guards are nice but this works so much better without one, been using a 24 tooth carbide saw blade for about ten years now on smaller echo trimmer for brush clearing on slopes and for estate pruning trees and cutting up limbs. If you use the rpms more than hitting the saplings with a little getting use to kickback is all but eliminated and the 12 to 3 and 6to9 have the least kick back but throw more debri. a 2to3 foot branch laying perpindicular to shaft and cut with grain can be dangerous also
