A video walk through of a lathe that I just bought. One correction, I said I have $225 in it, not entirely true. I bought a quick change tool post and accessories from www.shars.com for $200. Money well spent to save a lot of time. I also sold the old tool posts and tools for $75 and the countershaft pulley for $30 on Ebay, bringing my total to $120 before upgraded tooling. The Baldor motor is a 1 hp and I acquired it for free. I will be changing the adjustable belt to a fixed length belt soon, I just need to take the spindle out to do so. • Nice. I just picked up a QC54. Not sure how old it is. Its not clear to me how to get the bearing dust covers off without mucking them up. Any hints? I'm waiting for a cross feed miter gear, but otherwise it seems to all work. Cleaning it up a I go.

  • @namecollision They intimidated me too. I just took a sharp chisel and pointed it along one edge right where it meets the lathe casting. The first blow deformed it a little, but it knocked it loose and made the next ones require less impact and it came out easy.

  • $500.00 is a steal, especially when you consider the 2 milling attachments, the countershaft, and the quick change gear box. What about shipping charges, if any? FYI-1947 is NOT pretty old! I was born in 1946. That lathe is nearly new! Now that you have had it a while, what do you think?

  • @algae1000 Sorry, can I call it middle aged? ;) I love this thing. I don't know how I lived without one. It is the most often used tool in my garage now. Need to cut a chunk of pipe? Chuck it up in the lathe. Need to grind a bolt head down a bit? Chuck it up in the lathe!

  • I do love that reduction gearing! Amazing!

  • Do you notice any inaccuracy with the flat ways? I just bought a 1938 9" South bend and it has beautiful V ways and everything is tight.

  • Nice lathe. Truly envious is all I can say. I am always on the look out for one like this for around the same price but they are few and far between in as good of shape as yours. The closest Iv come is an Atlas under a tarp in someones back yard for $300 but it was so rusted it wasn't worth the time :( Im seriously considering and have researched turning my 9X20 HF lathe into a CNC. After seeing your video I may reconsider and invest in something as well built as your Atlas.

  • Thanks. I bet its older than I am.:) I was born about the time algae1000 was in high school. I guess that means I'm not middle age yet.

  • @roadracenut Wow! You really like that lathe! Wait until you discover the microwave oven! Yes, lathes can do almost anything, but so far, one has never fixed me a meal, or mowed my lawn. I am looking to fall in love with an Atlas mill? Do you know of any looking for a partner? My post is beginning to get stranger than I had intended. How about "pre-middle aged" lathe?

  • You lucky dog. Nice find.
