Big Bill Broonzy

Big Bill Broonzy (26 June 1898 -- 14 August 1958) was a prolific American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. His career began in the 1920s when he played Country blues to mostly black audiences. Through the '30s and '40s he successfully navigated a transition in style to a more urban blues sound popular with white audiences. In the 1950s a return to his traditional folk-blues roots made him one of the leading figures of the emerging American folk music revival and an international star. His long and varied career marks him as one of the key figures in the development of blues music in the 20th century.

Broonzy copyrighted more than 300 songs during his lifetime, including both adaptations of traditional folk songs and original blues songs. As a blues composer, he was unique in that his compositions reflected the many vantage points of his rural-to-urban experiences

Has anyone out there ever heard of anyone that can play like this, so easy, so relaxed and every note is crystal clear, and both the instruament and voice propell each other. This must be a gift from God!

  • super nice hank

  • el maestro del bluz

  • In the new bio of Big Bill he credits Blind Blake and BlindLemon for learning his clean, smooth style. He was also proficient on his first instrument, the fiddle. Bill is now one of the lesser known blues giants.

  • Big Bill really is the best. The physical part of his unmatched guitar work has to do with the unique attack of his right hand. The only other country blues man I have heard that seems to me to be in the same league is Blind Blake (at least on the guitar). Blake has even more moves on the instrument with almost the same level of tone clarity and rhythm.

  • Fantastic!

  • There is another...This one sounds a lot like Blind Lemon Jefferson's Piedmont style slowed down a bit,& with a bit deeper voice. Listen to blind lemon's black snake moan,& you can here where this comes from.

  • Sounds like hellhound on my trail

  • @livndream4u2 heh-any blues man would tell you, it wasnt god, it was the other guy!
