  • Still haven't been out so far, will be using the canoe over christmas though. The hiking seats are good, comfortable and still tight. I used cheap rope that is braided around a core not sure what that type is. I got it from a discount building supplies place and the outer shell is became undone in some parts from the constant threading. So when they need to be replaced I'll use better materials.

  • Have you managed to swamp it in heavy chop yet?

Recovery tecniques (besides bailing like a madman...)?

  • @Kolon999

I haven't been out much over winter but now that spring is here I hope to be back on the water soon. I did consider getting a self bailer installed, but chickened out at the idea of having to cut a hole in the hull. So the only advice I can give is to carry a big bucket.

  • Good question, I don't actually know. I can lift it by myself but the length makes it awkard to carry. At a guess I'd say it's in the 40-50kg range.

  • Well done! It seems to sit fairly high in the water. What does the hull weigh?

  • @kwbloke Rod, I weighed up the hull up on the bathroom scales and it is about 36kg! I pretty pleased with that.

  • .. also - on the net hiking seat - what kind of line did you use?

  • I have proof-of-concept for swamp recovery on my 21' ulua. It involves floatation close to the hull (in this case sliding the iakos inward so the ama fulfills that function) and flipping the hull sideways so the floatation keeps it out of the water and the water in the hull drains. Dry as abone when it settles back upright.

One more question: how is the net hiking seat working out for you? Would you make any changes if you could do it over again?

  • Excellent vid. The strip-built hull is tops.
