Wayne Messmer sings the National Anthem at Chicago Stadium during the '91 NHL All-Star game, days after the U.S. went into Iraq at the start of the Gulf War. He is nearly drowned out by the crowd.

This was broadcast live to the troops in the Middle East, and Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf played this for his soldiers to show them the support they had from the American public.

  • I have a great admiration for the americans for this sense of proud. I hope one day, my people from Brazil get this same sense.

    Greeting from Rio de Janeiro.

  • As a Hawk fan who attends game regularly, everyone should know the reason this is done. Before you applaud or critique this, read the story. Understand it. Learn the history of the team, the building, what was happening at the time. It's ok to share your opinions because this country gives you the freedom to do so. Does anyone know what 5/9/85 was? Please learn more and then want to hear EDUCATED arguments both ways. Thanks! Go Hawks!

  • The building shook. My body shook even at the age of 40! I have been to MSQ in the 1980s for the playoffs and that was extraordinary when I lost my voice.

Moved to LA to work on a government project in 95. Any saving grace my beloved Rangers and Mike Keenan finally won a Stanley Cup in June, 1994 when I lived in Chicago. But it was wonderful to see the Hawks finally win one a few years back

All of that pales to the old Chicago Stadium. It was mesmerizing.

  • I am a Leafs fan, living in Toronto and man I love listening to this over and over again.... Way to go, Chicago!

  • @KenAestheticCreative Loved your comments! Always remembered 4/28/94. How long did it take YOU to leave? Loved all the old buildings but the Stadium was awesome! Anyone that did not get goosebumps at hearing the anthem, esp in that building, I feel sorry for you. Long live hockey!

  • Extraordinary moment in time. The greatest rendition of America's national anthem in the history of sports; even more moving than our beloved Kate Smith in 1976 at the Spectrum. As a Ranger fan I stood with the faithful in the rafters the last game ever played there vs. Toronto, Game 6. I will never forget it. Chicago, America's best city! Preserve all that is left! Stand proud!

  • The 160 people who disliked this video have no souls. Screw them all.

  • I just had to comment again cause this is one of the best national anthems I've ever seen. American flags flying and nothing but proud Americans. It doesn't get any better than this

  • My dad was in desert storm awful war he brung back some pics of cars blown up with nothing but peoples bones left in them smoke clouds of oil burning he's kinda messed up from all the chemicals they used in the air in that war.

  • @aznredneck0311.. God bless you

  • Just a question, lately I have discovered many americans are very angry with their government and politicians. I understand some of the factors, may be the financial crisis, obamas health care program... could someone perhaps give me a good answer? /Oliver
