Stringer was the best character that they had on the wire I mean he was so calculating and sinister it was sad tat he had to go but he snitched and tried to reform the drug trade in baltimore and those were mistakes.

That's the best scene that I have ever watched on a TV series. That is modern day Shakespeare. I love Stringer's attitude change when Avon mocks him by asking what life has he snatched.

I'm stunned that McNullty and Stringer Bell are British..Just like Ian McShane from Deadwood...unbelievable.

Wow, this post is a blast from the past. Thanks MrZugga, I imagined he and other characters were amalgams of real people, but didn't realise the name was real. I'm not at all surprised when you consider the number of characters in Deadwood that were based on real people, even their names. Not only was there a real Gem Saloon (although I think it was called the Gem Theatre) but it was really run by a man named Al Swearingen. Actually more of the characters were based on real people than not.

@BigEnos001 there was a real Avon Barksdale who was a Baltimore gangster. In the Wire, Avon was modeled after several gang leaders, including Melvin Williams

Because I dink before I snatch a life. Do you dink before you snatch a life Stringer?

Also, just as a little aside, I was walking through Brixton just this morning to get the tube and couldn't help thinking that this is where Stringer/Idris used to live...Also, has anyone ever heard of anyone else called Avon? Is it possible that the writers named him after Avon, the greatest character from Blake's 7? Who knows? Possibly...I've probably watched too much tv...

I remember the genuine one-two gut punches of seeing this scene for the first time. First the unexpected provoked confession/retort and then even more remarkably that the writers allowed Avon to accept the truth of Stringer's words when a more predictable show would have had him retaliate without thinking there and then. Characters revealing their true natures gradually and confounding expectation was just one of the genius things about The Wire.

the best scene ever created on television...movies...anything
....awesome...long live the mother fuckin Wire -
You have got to be kidding me!! That was one of the best Stringer Bell scenes ever! Whoever the chick is that played Donnette is one lucky girl. Women all over pretty much melted when this came on. Are you blind??

Nah.. Avon knew Stringer was right about D.. he had to go.. he was mad at first but he got over that. He didn't have a choice but to give Stringer to Mouzone, otherwise he would never be able to do business in NYC again.
i just saw the trailer for the final season and i guess avon is coming back! just a shame stringer aint around no more..
