In the wake of the anti-defamation campaign against MTV's reality show Jersey Shore, the John D. Calandra Italian American Istitute of CUNY decided to host a colloquium entitled "Guido: An Italian-American Youth Style."

Some exponents of the Italian-American community objected to the Calandra Institute holding such colloquium at all, seeing it as a "legitimation" of the guido lifestyle and a support for MTV.

It's like, when the United States was first created you just locked the doors to the outside world and haven't gone outside since. I've heard 'Italian-Americans' ask 'Do they have plug sockets in Italy?'...I mean, REALLY? Here in London I bumped into this man from New York who was on holiday, he asked for directions but upon reply he said 'I didn't know they spoke english in London'..
