Cleone, California— Monday, October 6, at about 9 a.m. Fort Bragg Fire Department was dispatched to an explosion and fire near Highway 1 and Mill Creek Drive in Cleone. As of Tuesday at 4 p.m., Jay Sallinen, of Fort Bragg is alive and recovering at UC Davis Medical Center, with burns over 30 percent of his body. According to his family, he is doing better and breathing on his own. The explosion destroyed one house and damaged two others. CAL Fire investigators attribute the cause to "propane in the structure," but have yet to determine what ignited it. More details to follow in the Oct. 9 issue of the Advocate-News.
@joekiddent Dont disrespect our serving men and women. Not everyone knows there's a little shithole on the west coast that is also named Fort Bragg.

Sucks the man got hurt, but I am so happy to see that house gone! The people I would see living/hanging out there looked like tweakers and it was an old dirty house. They are STILL working on building the new house, looks much better!
Heard the guy opened a closet with a lighter and blew everything up. I live a mile down the road and was woken up by the blow.

We were less than half mile away and the power of the explosion was so intense. It really freaked us out. All we could do was call the fire department since we had no idea where it originated.

The owner of the home lives in another city. The CARETAKER, Mr. Sallinen, is alive and in UC DAVIS.

It is possible that static electricity from simply opening a door or turning a doorknob ignited the explosion, the propane concentration in the air only has to be 2.1% to be EXTREMELY explosive. Or maybe dude flipped on a light switch...from what the local paper says, he just opened the door. That house was saturated with propane, and if neighbors smelled propane gas, the fire dept. or the gas company should have been notified, not the caretaker. Lessons learned! I'm glad dude is okay!

But it was an explosion and there must have been some kind of fire to light the gas. I just heard about it yesterday and am not so sure about the truth. When the man recovers, hopefully if he recovers, he will explain what really happened and it will be in the paper for a few weeks.
