@cockfight420 they're also used by the military in some branches sense you can keep snow out it as well keep dust, dirt, mud, insects, and other stuff out. so its not design only to be used in snow.

I love my Gaiters.. but putting them on the first time was a pain. I put the buckle on the inside.. they were a lot easier to buckle for me.

I'm so glad I bought them.

these "snakes" as you call them, are actually boots, and damn good ones. they are almost waterproof (I mean you can't walk like a week in deep snow without drying them, but hey...)

gaiters protect from snow coming in your boots when the snow is actually deeper than your boot is hight. as they are of gore tex material they are also almost water proof so hiking in snow is no problem...
