The Madness of King George is a 1994 film directed by Nicholas Hytner and adapted by Alan Bennett from his own play, The Madness of George III. It tells the true story of George III's deteriorating mental health, and his equally declining relationship with his son, the Prince of Wales, particularly focusing on the period around the Regency Crisis of 1788. Modern medicine has suggested that the King's symptoms were the result of acute intermittent porphyria.

The film depicts the relatively primitive medical practices of the time and the suppositions that physicians made in their efforts to understand the human body. The King's doctors attempt cures such as blistering and purges. Meanwhile, another of the King's physicians, Dr. Pepys, analyses the King's stool and urine believing that body wastes may contain some clue to the Royal malady. Finally, Lady Pembrooke recommends Dr. Willis, an ex-minister who attempts to cure the insane through behaviour modification. None of the three methods of treatment entirely cures the King; eventually his illness abates.

  • 'God rot all Royals; give us the wisdom of America'??!! Why is there bloody US propaganda in every film that comes out of America or that kowtows to Hollywood! ? This film is clearly made for an American audience because of the pronunciation of certain words and the fact that the term 'regency' had to be explained.

  • It's Bilbo Baggins!

  • @LaraDing 1994 dawg.

  • Poor Queen Charlotte. It must have been so heartbreaking for her. And when he weeps because he missed her. How unspeakably miserable he must have been, poor soul. If they'd been allowed to be together I think he would have been far happier, and she would have done all she could to make him comfortable.

  • Poor Queen Charlotte. It must have been so heartbreaking for her.

  • Georges son is unbearable! crass! rude! juvenile! and hes the twit being groomed for the throne?? Britain must have dreaded that day to come!

  • Poor old King George should of just said fuck it and settled in America to live the good life. He could of become a real king and one without obligations i might add. Maybe that was his problem.

  • @LaraDing I fear you trust too much faith in the intellegence of our fellow citizens, its a channel 4 films production, no hollywood film about any monarchy would have such an elequent script

  • @uwed100 Its a channel 4 film as in the british channel 4, also made trainspotting and I'd argue less made for an american audience than say Elizabeth and young Victoria etc but yeah nobody cares less about the British royal family than the British, maybe Australians

  • @ticklemepurple86 It tells you at the end what they believe he was suffering from

  • Was his son, future George IV, that big of an ass hole?

  • What the hell was wrong with him?!....psychiatric disorder is obvious ?
