По мотивам повести русского писателя Николая Гоголя "Ночь перед Рождеством".
Причудливое сочетание рождественской фантасмагории и эксцентрической сказки делает этот фильм незабываемым зрелищем. Действие разворачивается и в Малороссии, и в селе Диканьке, и во дворце русской императрицы. Кузнец Вакула прогневил самого Черта: он так намалевал в церкви его фигуру, что смеялись даже обитатели ада. Мать Вакулы, Солоха, слывет ведьмой и любит полетать на помеле. Любимая девушка Вакулы, Оксана, требует себе в подарок на Рождество черевички (туфельки), которые носит сама императрица. Лишь тогда она согласна выйти замуж за Вакулу. Черт же обещает помочь кузнецу достать туфельки с ноги императрицы, только если тот продаст ему душу. Времени же до Рождества остается совсем немного.
Die Nacht vor Weihnachten (Wetschera na chutorje blis Dikanki)
Der Film ist nach der Erzählung «Die Nacht vor Weihnachten» von dem bekannten russischen Schriftsteller N. Gogol.
Ein bizarres Gemisch von Weihnachtsphantasmagorie mit einem verschrobenen Märchen macht diesen Film zu einem unvergesslichen Schauspiel. Die Handlung des Filmes entwickelt sich in dem Kleinrusslandsdorf Dikanka und bei dem Hof der russischen Kaiserin. Der Schmied Vakula hat den Teufel selbst in Ärger gebracht: Er hat in der Kirche seine Figur so gezeichnet, dass sogar die Einwohner der Hölle darüber viel gelacht haben. Vakula's Mutter Solokha gilt für eine Hexe, sie hat es gern, ab und zu auf einem Besen zu fliegen. Vakula's Geliebte Oksana will als Weihnachtsgeschenk die Schuhe haben, die die Kaiserin selbst trägt. Nur unter dieser Bedingung ist sie einverstanden Vakula zu heiraten. Der Teufel verspricht ihm zu helfen die Schuhe von Kaiserin's Füßen zu kriegen aber Vakula muss für diese Leistung seine Seele dem Teufel verkaufen. Und die Zeit wird knapp.

The whimsical combination of Christmas phantasmagoria and an eccentric fairy tale makes this film an unforgettable spectacle. The action takes place both in a village of Dikanka in the Ukraine and at the palace of a Russian Empress. Blacksmith Vacula has enraged the devil himself: in a church he painted the devil's figure in such a way that even the Hell's inhabitants could not help laughing. Solokha, Vacula's mother, is known to be a witch, not averse to flying on a besom. Vacula's sweetheart, Oksana, demands for a Christmas present a pair of tcherevichki (shoes) that the Empress wears. Only then she will agree to marry Vacula. And the devil promises to help the blacksmith get the Empress's shoes, on condition that Vacula sells him his soul. Meanwhile, Christmas is almost here.
