Kuressaare's Teutonic Castle was an easy walk from the hotel and the group set off for a tour. A crisp, cold, autumn day, perfect for viewing the castle (dating from 1384) standing alone on vast grounds and surrounded by a moat.
At the turn of the 14th century, the castle was surrounded by walls, some of which are still preserved and cannon towers. The last bishop of Saaremaa eventually sold the castle to the Danes who fortified the systems and built a wide moat.
First fact: Did you know that people drank beer instead of water in those days? Easier to get along with no worries about germs!
