You can put large birds on a Weber, but need to cover "those" areas in alfoil. Should have closed the top vent down some, to hold the smoke in, in my opinion. It's very difficult getting a large turkey completely thawed.
You can definitely smoke and smoke well, in a standard Weber. Just commenting, not criticising! It's all experience, well done for the first time.

As for using the Weber Charcoal Basketd for indirect cooking, I have found that the biggest bird you can cook without killing the legs, and wings is a 12 pounder or less. There just is t that much room with charcoal on both sides. Search YT for Smokenator, or Minion Method. All the charcoal is in one side and burns from the top down with a water pan above the fire to create humidity.

You should put the chips on the cooking grate, chunks give a longer smoke. Billowing smoke means bitterness. My best suggestion for a fellow Q'er is get a Smokenator. You'll love it!

Great job, especially for your first time. How' did it taste?
Burnt black on the outside. Raw in the middle. And frozen inside. Just the way I like it! lol

@rugcutter284 LOL It wasn't that bad. Actually it was pretty good! I just had to put it back on a little longer.
