THIS PROJECT WIN: POWER REDUCED, RANGE-EXTENDED, AD-HOC TACTICAL LINK (PRATL) (SPONSOR: SPAWAR, MENTORS: CHRIS MEAGHER, RANDALL OLSEN, CHRIS CIRULLO)OBJECTIVE: TO CONFIGURE TWO LINUX BASED COMPUTER TO USE LONG RANGE 802.11 RADIOS, MONITOR LINK STATUS AND SIGNAL STRENGTH, AND CONTROL A SWITCHED DIRECTIONAL ANTENNA, ESTABLISH A 5.7 MI LINK.
BACKGROUND: SPAWAR HAS DEVELOPED A WIRELESS SYSTEM THAT CAN MAINTAIN LONG RANGE CONNECTIONS. THE CURRENT IMPLEMENTATION USES HIGH POWER, EXPENSIVE, COMMERCIL, WIRELESS EUIPMENT.
APPROACH & METODOLOGY: CREATE A PLAN FOR WORK TO FOLLOW - ACQUIRE ALL PARTS NECESSARY FOR PROJECT - BEGIN FAMILIARIZATION LINUX - UNDERSTAND UTILITES OF LONG-802.11 RADIO - MAKE A CONNECTION IN THE LAB SETTING - RUN LAB TESTS TO CONFIRM RADIO SPECIFICATIONS - USE SIMULATION SOFTWARE TO CONFIRM LINK IS POSSIBLE - ESTABLISH 5.7 MI LINK - TET SIGNL STRENGTH MONITOR AND SWITCHING CONTROL CONCLUSION: A CONNECTION WAS SUCCESULLY ESTABLISHED AT 5.7 MI WITH TWO LAPTOPS USING THE LONG-RANGE 802.11 RADIO. THE CONSTRUCTION OF TWO SWITCHED DIRECTIONAL ANTENNAS HA BEEN COMPLETED. THE SIGNAL STRENGTH CAN BE MONITORED VI SCRIPT RUNNING IN LINUX. A SCRIPT TO CONTROL ANTENNA SWITCHING AND MAINTAIN THE STRONGEST CONNECTION HAS BEEN CREATED.
